Comox Golf Club is a par-70 public course in British Columbia, playing 5,400 yards from the RED/YELLOW tees with a rating of 71.1 and slope of 125. Nine holes, 2,485 yards and greens of New Zealand fescue when it opened in 1928.
The Course
James Robb and his son pre-empted this steep, heavily forested shore in 1863, meaning to clear it, build a dock and sell town lots for the village that would inevitably follow. Robb died in 1889 with none of it done. In November 1921 a newcomer named Sidney d'Esterre, known as Dusty, put together a consortium of local businessmen to buy the 283-acre Robb estate, and what finally happened to the land was golf.
The Comox Golf Club Company formed in April 1922 proposing nine holes for $3,350, and sold forty shares at $100 each to pay for them. Seven holes were playable by September 1927, when local golfers were invited to try them for free. The course opened properly in April 1928: nine holes, 2,485 yards, greens of New Zealand fescue.
In 1931 the Courtenay and Comox area held 1,210 people and supported two golf courses. By 1932 Vancouver club memberships had fallen by as much as 60 per cent in the recession and both of these held on regardless. Robert Filberg took control of the land for the members in 1934 and merged the two clubs under the Comox name.
