Fraserview Golf Course is a par-72 public course in Vancouver, British Columbia, playing 6,689 yards from the TEE 1 tees with a rating of 72.1 and slope of 126. It is the one of Vancouver's three municipals with real ground under it.
The Course
Major H.L. McPherson laid out nine holes here in 1934, on the slope running down toward the Fraser. Tom McBroom rebuilt the course in 1998, four years after he had finished with Langara. The two came out of the same hands and look nothing alike.
Fraserview is the one with ground under it. Langara is flat enough that you forget you are walking; Fraserview climbs and falls through mature timber with the river showing through the trees on the way down. It is 6,689 yards to Langara's 6,058, and it asks for all of them.
It is also one of the busiest public courses in the country, which is not the usual company for a course that most visitors have never heard of. SCOREGolf readers have given it bronze for best public course in Canada and named it one of the most underrated. Both of those can be true of the same municipal at once.
Across the holes we have mapped, the fairway measures a median 31 yards wide where a tee shot lands, and pinches to 19 at its narrowest. Nine of the 18 holes bend more than 18 yards off the straight line, and they nearly all turn right. The map carries 77 bunkers and 247 individual trees. Water crosses the line of play on the 18th.
The bunkering here is set for a driver, 26 of them inside the driving zone. Yards checks whether laying back off them beats carrying them, hole by hole, for your handicap, then names the target that loses fewest strokes. Holes 1 and 2 are open to anyone, which here means a 357-yard par 4 and a 483-yard par 5.
Worth knowing before you go
- Out in Killarney, about 12 km southeast of downtown, and off the SkyTrain network. Unlike Langara this one is a drive or a bus.
- The undulating ground is the whole difference from the other two municipals. There are real slopes to climb and walking it is genuine exercise.
- There is a driving range on site and the Golf Institute at Fraserview runs the teaching operation.
- Certified an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, as are Langara and McCleery.
