Langara Golf Course Vancouver, British Columbia
Langara Golf Course is a par-71 public course in Vancouver, British Columbia, playing 6,058 yards from the Tee 1 tees with a rating of 68.2 and slope of 120. Length is not the defence here. The trees are.
The Course
Canadian Pacific Railway built Langara in 1926, largely to make the land around it worth selling. The Park Board bought the course in 1973. Thomas McBroom rebuilt it in 1994 on a budget that went on to decide the next thirty years: the job reused the existing soil instead of importing new, the course drained badly, and Langara became the one you did not book after rain.
That ended in 2023. The city ran 83 kilometres of drainage pipe through the 114 acres, hole by hole, keeping the course open while it went in. The Park Board now pitches it as the driest course in the Lower Mainland. Worth knowing when you read reviews, because anything written before 2023 is describing a different golf course.
What neither renovation touched is the routing. It is a compact loop on Vancouver's south slope, walkable, with large rolling greens and corridors that close in fast. Every one of the four par 3s is under 180 yards. The card reads easy. The corridors do not.
Across the holes we have mapped, the fairway measures a median 29 yards wide where a tee shot lands, and pinches to 24 at its narrowest. Nine of the 18 holes bend more than 18 yards off the straight line, and they nearly all turn right. The map carries 42 bunkers and 978 individual trees. Water crosses the line of play on the 13th.
Those trees are not scenery, they are a cost. Yards prices a ball hit into cover at what it really costs you, lost-ball odds included, then names the target that loses fewest strokes. Holes 1 and 2 are open to anyone, which here means a 316-yard par 4 and a 179-yard par 3.
Worth knowing before you go
- Seven minutes on foot from Langara-49th Avenue station on the Canada Line, and there is a bus stop on Cambie halfway up the course. It is the easiest full course in Vancouver to reach without a car.
- It is the shortest and least played of the city's three full municipal courses, at roughly 50,000 rounds a year. McCleery and Fraserview take the rest.
- Reviews complaining about mud are almost all older than the 2023 drainage work. The course was built for winter play now.
- Flat enough to walk without thinking about it. Nothing on the property asks for a cart.
- Certified an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2004, along with Vancouver's other two municipal courses.
