Marine Drive Golf Club Vancouver, British Columbia
Marine Drive Golf Club is a par-70 public course in Vancouver, British Columbia, playing 6,419 yards from the BLACK tees with a rating of 76.8 and slope of 135. A.V. Macan fitted eighteen holes onto 105 acres here, and defended them with almost no sand.
The Course
Marine Drive was founded in 1922 and hired A.V. Macan to turn the McCleery family's farmland into a golf course. He fitted eighteen holes onto 105 acres, which was tight even by the standards of the day, and defended them with almost no sand and greens contoured hard enough that the recovery shot became the interesting part.
It runs a little over 6,400 yards from the back tees and it is not remotely a short course to play. Macan's answer to length was angle. The ladies' section dates from 1929, and Barbara Renwick went from it to two BC Women's Championships.
The club has kept the design in careful hands. Rod Whitman has been consulting architect since 2021, and he and Keith Cutten rebuilt the practice range in 2024 with new target greens, contouring and drainage.
Worth knowing before you go
- Private. Member and guest play only.
- Macan drew McCleery next door 37 years later, on the other half of the same farm. The two are a study in one architect at either end of a career.
- On the river at the foot of Yew Street, on 105 acres. The land is the constraint here, not the card.
