Riverway Golf Course is a par-72 public course in Burnaby, British Columbia, playing 7,004 yards from the BLACK tees with a rating of 73.3 and slope of 128. It is the longest municipal course in the Lower Mainland, and the only one built as a championship test.
The Course
Les Furber built Riverway in 1994 on the Big Bend flats in south Burnaby, and he built it as a links. On a river floodplain that is less of a conceit than it sounds: wind-swept fescue mounding, pale sand, and not a great deal to hide behind.
At 7,004 yards from the back it is the longest course in this corner of the Lower Mainland by a clear margin, and the only municipal one that reads as a championship test rather than a good walk. It hosted the BC Amateur over 13 to 16 July 2026 and takes the BC Women's Amateur in 2027.
The trade Furber makes for that length is room. The fairways are generous by Vancouver standards, and the defence is sand and water instead: creeks in play on four holes, and a bunker count that runs to the high seventies.
Across the holes we have mapped, the fairway measures a median 30 yards wide where a tee shot lands, and pinches to 21 at its narrowest. Nine of the 18 holes bend more than 18 yards off the straight line. The map carries 77 bunkers and 416 individual trees. Water crosses the line of play on the 3rd, 9th, 11th and 13th.
Those trees are not scenery, they are a cost. Yards prices a ball hit into cover at what it really costs you, lost-ball odds included, then names the target that loses fewest strokes. Holes 1 and 2 are open to anyone, which here means a 403-yard par 4 and a 402-yard par 4.
Worth knowing before you go
- Run by the City of Burnaby, not Vancouver, so it sits outside the municipal card most Vancouver golfers carry.
- 54 covered, heated, floodlit range stalls. In a Vancouver February that is the actual reason to drive out here.
- Hosted the BC Amateur 13 to 16 July 2026, 156 players. The BC Women's Amateur follows in 2027.

The hole bends right about 223 yards out, and the fairway is 47 yards wide at 230 yards. Water crosses the line 169 yards from the back tee. A bunker sits 260 out on the right. Four bunkers ring the green. With 60 mapped trees along it, this is the tightest corridor on the course.
The hole bends left about 211 yards out, and the fairway is 52 yards wide at 200 yards. Four bunkers work down the right from 226 yards. Two greenside bunkers, and 38 yards of green to work with.
