Shaughnessy Golf Course Vancouver, British Columbia
Shaughnessy Golf Course is a par-73 private course in Vancouver, British Columbia, playing 7,045 yards from the BLACK tees with a rating of 74.8 and slope of 134. Designed by Vernon Macan / Doug Carrick (1960). Vardon, Ray, Bobby Jones and Babe Didrikson Zaharias all played the club's old ground.
The Course
Richard Marpole gathered eight Vancouver businessmen on 26 April 1911 and founded Shaughnessy Heights Golf Club, with the CPR behind it. Nine holes and a half-finished clubhouse opened on 2 November 1912. When the back nine followed the next spring, Shaughnessy Heights had the only eighteen in Vancouver.
What came through the old course is a list. Harry Vardon and Ted Ray played it in 1913, weeks after the U.S. Open that made Francis Ouimet famous, and both broke the course record of 70. President Warren Harding played a round on his one-day visit to Vancouver in July 1923. Three thousand people walked the hills in 1934 to watch Bobby Jones. Babe Didrikson Zaharias drew nearly as many in 1952. The Canadian Open arrived in 1948, the first time it had ever been played west of Ontario.
The club moved to its present ground on Southwest Marine Drive in 1960, to a second Macan design. That land belongs to the Musqueam Nation and was leased to the club through federal agents, in meetings the Nation was not part of. The Canadian Open came back in 1966, 2005 and 2011.
Across the holes we have mapped, the fairway measures a median 27 yards wide where a tee shot lands, and pinches to 16 at its narrowest. Ten of the 18 holes bend more than 18 yards off the straight line. The map carries 65 bunkers. Water crosses the line of play on the 4th and 5th.
A median 27 yards of landing area is the kind of number that settles a round before you swing. Yards works the tee shot on every hole here for your handicap and your own carry distances, then names the target that loses fewest strokes. Holes 1 and 2 are open to anyone, which here means a 475-yard par 5 and a 389-yard par 4.
Worth knowing before you go
- Private.
- The 1911 club was on different ground entirely. What you play today is Macan's 1960 course.
- Fire destroyed the original wooden clubhouse in August 1916, taking the club's books and correspondence with it. The replacement opened on the same site in May 1917.
- Macan went into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in 2018. He also drew Marine Drive and McCleery, both a few minutes away.
- Four Canadian Opens: 1948, 1966, 2005 and 2011.
