Squamish Valley Golf Club Squamish, British Columbia
Squamish Valley Golf Club is a par-72 semi-private course in Squamish, British Columbia, playing 6,463 yards from the BLACK tees with a rating of 71.4 and slope of 126. Designed by Gordie MacKay / Robert Muir Graves (1967). The members built it themselves, and cleared the rocks off the fairways as they played.
The Course
In 1965 a handful of locals decided Squamish should have a golf course, and set about building one. Nine holes opened on 1 July 1967. Eighteen followed two years later. It was laid out on an old riverbed, and the members cleared the rocks off the fairways as they played through them, a round at a time.
That origin is still legible in the golf. At 6,463 yards it was never going to defend itself with length, so it does the job with sand and with the creeks that the old riverbed left behind.
It runs as a members' club and a public course at the same time, which is how it has always worked here.
Across the holes we have mapped, the fairway measures a median 32 yards wide where a tee shot lands, and pinches to 21 at its narrowest. Nine of the 18 holes bend more than 18 yards off the straight line, and they nearly all turn right. The map carries 142 bunkers and 502 individual trees. Water crosses the line of play on the 6th and 13th.
Those trees are not scenery, they are a cost. Yards prices a ball hit into cover at what it really costs you, lost-ball odds included, then names the target that loses fewest strokes. Holes 1 and 2 are open to anyone, which here means a 539-yard par 5 and a 371-yard par 4.
Worth knowing before you go
